Nearly every battle in ancient times started with a verbal exchange between two representatives from each army who had gathered on the field between the armies ready for battle. The wittier the insults, the more enthused the warriors would be for the impending conflict. Therefore, it happened in the ancient world, the early Middle Ages, and the era of the knights and samurai.
Unfortunately, the battles have increasingly shifted online and this great skill is all but lost. Even while it no longer results in victory, the ability to thoroughly destroy any opponent with just one smart remark and make them choke on a comeback is still extremely valuable.
The most unexpected, powerful, and amazing comebacks ever spoken, written, or typed are the focus of a whole community on Reddit called r/Comebacks. The community currently has 14.8K members and hundreds of actual combo-breaking witticisms.
