A new meme craze has recently taken over the Internet: humorous visual puns that mainly make fun of the names of famous people. It all began on September 8, 2008, when a picture of Reese Witherspoon clutching a spoon was posted on the art discussion forum b3ta. The actress was depicted in the image next to it without the spoon, and the caption read cleverly, “Reese Withoutaspoon.”
A celebrity name that was a mirror image of Kanye West, with the name changed to Kanye East, then went popular almost a year later. KnowYourMeme claims that the phenomenon didn’t take off until 2012, when Tumblr user i-am-oregonian uploaded a name-pun combining Jafar from the Disney animated blockbuster Aladdin. From February through April, the post received more than 65.000 notes.
